A common feature of eighteenth-century theatre when a short comedy, sometimes a ballet, was performed to round up an evening of more serious drama, usually tragedy - though it has also been used as thematic concept by playwrights, most recently by Brian Friel in Afterplay (a short duologue which brings together two of Chekhov's characters from different plays).
