Traditionally, an actress refers to a female performer, yet - despite such luminaries as Sarah Bernhardt (who ran her own company) or contemporary stars like Judi Dench - the term has been taken by feminists as signifying subsidiary status. So today, the female performer is generally referred to by the same term as her now de-gendered male counterpart, the Actor.
