Nightwood Theatre and B current present the first workshop of Ahdri Zhina Mandiela's dark diaspora in dub, at the Toronto Fringe, marking the invention of "dub theatre." In addition to recording her own dub poetry in her debut EP, "First and Last" or "Step/into my head, barefoot & black", Mandiela goes on to produce and direct the 1998 film On/black'stage/women, which celebrates the contribution over 30 years made by Black women to the Toronto theatre scene, by profiling artists such as Djanet Sears, Tricia Williams and Sharon Lewis. And, as the Artistic Director of the lesbian group Sistaz, designed to create a network of Black artists and companies, Mandiela will be developing new Black pieces at the annual rock.paper.Sistahz festival.

Daniel David Moses' Almighty Voice and His Wife premieres at Ottawa's Great Canadian Theatre Company under the direction of Lib Spry. The fourth play by Moses, a Delaware from the Six Nations, this makes him a finalist in the 1991 Governor General's Award for Drama, and he is described as "a coroner of the theatre who slices open the human heart to reveal the fear, hatred and love that have eaten away at it" (the Globe & Mail, reviewing The Indian Medicine Shows. An Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts Group, Moses will eventually expand to epic plays that are labeled Shakespearian in scope, like Brebeuf's Ghost (2003): a historical epic, dramatizing the flight from Iriquois attack of an Ojibwa community across the Canadian Shield in 1649.
