The gay playwright Daniel MacIvor founds da da kamera as a venue for staging his own plays. See Bob Run produced in 1987 by Buddies in Bad Times together with da da kamera and performed by Caroline Gillis at the Poor Alex Theatre, marking the beginnings of MacIvor's brilliant career in Toronto, and of a Toronto invasion of sorts by innovative young Cape Breton theatre artists that include, in addition to MacIvor, playwrights Bryden MacDonald and Audrey Butler. His other plays specifically for da da Kamera include Yes I Am and Who Are You? (1989), Never Swim Alone (1991), This is a Play and The Lorca Play (both 1992), and Cul-de-Sac (2003), which garner MacIvor two Dora Mavor Moore Awards and a Chalmers Award. Many of his plays are restaged by the Epicentre Theatre, Vancouver. Nominated for the Governor General's Award, MacIvor's In On It, which he directs for the 2000 Edinburgh Festival, is also awarded a Village Voice OBIE.
