Modern Theatre in Context: A Critical Timeline

Beverley Simons's Crabdance receives its premiere production in Seattle. Its Canadian premiere is three years later at the Playhouse Theatre Centre in Vancouver. An Absurdist play that has been compared with The American Dream by Edward Albee, this deals with the abandoned situation of elderly women and the manipulations they undertake to survive. As Simons wrote "I saw around me again and again a kind of woman who tormented and destroyed people around her... She was sitting on my head, on my breast, sucking the energy out of me...I started to write because I had to get rid of this woman, (but) I got inside her head and her guts and I began to understand her. What started out almost as an act of hate became an act of compassion". While The Vancouver Province hailed it as"A fierce, exhausting play...", it was to prove her only widely performed play.
